Anthony of Padua, The Adoration of the Magi

1529-73
Fresco
Church of St. Roch, Draguć, Istria, Croatia.

The Magi are here portrayed as kings and representatives of the three ages of Man. On the left the ride out of Jerusalem and the oldest one points the others to Bethlehem, represented in the background as a city on a nearby hill. In the center they travel there, and on the right they meet the child and the one in front presents his gift.

Of the two younger Magi, one has a crown and the other does not; the oldest one has a crown in the scene on the left but not on the right.

The child sits on his mother's lap directly below the star that has guided the Magi. As usual, Mary is seated and her hair is covered. St. Joseph can be seen in the lower right corner.
